Water is often referred to as our most precious resource, and for a good reason – drinking water and wastewater services sustain core functions of the critical infrastructure, communities, and human life itself. Our water systems are threatened by aging infrastructure, floods, drought, storms, earthquakes, sea level rise, population growth, cyber-security breaches, and pollution, often in combination. Marginalized communities inevitably feel the worst impacts, and our response continues to be hampered by fragmented and antiquated governance and management practices. This paper focuses on the resilience of water sector (drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater [DWS]) to three major hazards (Sea-Level Rise, Earthquake, and Cyberattack). The purpose of this paper is to provide information useful for creating and maintaining resilient water system services. The term resilience describes the ability to adapt to changing conditions and to withstand and recover from disruptions. The resilience of DWS systems is of utmost importance to modern societies that are highly dependent on continued access to these water sector services. This review covers the terminology on water sector resilience and the assessment of a broad landscape of threats mapped with the proposed framework. A more detailed discussion on two areas of resilience is given: Physical Resilience, which is currently a major factor influencing disruptions and failures in DWS systems, and Digital Resilience, which is a rapidly increasing concern for modern infrastructure systems. The resilience of DWS systems should be considered holistically, inclusive of social, digital, and physical systems. The framework integrates various perspectives on water system threats by showcasing interactions between the parts of the DWS systems and their environment. While the challenges of change, shock and stresses are inevitable, embracing a social–ecological–technical system-of-systems and whole-life approach will allow us to better understand and operationalize resilience.

Objective
This study details the intra-operative complications, and compares auditory scales post-implantation of either profoundly deaf young children with radiologically normal inner ears (group A) or children with Mondini dysplasia (group B).
MethodsA retrospective survey was carried out of 338 patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who underwent cochlear implant surgery from February 2015 to May 2017. Patients were divided into 2 groups of 27 patients each. Both groups were followed up to three years post-implantation.
ResultsCerebrospinal fluid ooze developed in 12 patients, and 2 patients had a cerebrospinal fluid ‘gusher’, one of which had to be explored within 24 hours. After implant use for one year, both groups had similar speech perception scores.
ConclusionThe cerebrospinal fluid gusher in Mondini dysplasia should be anticipated and adequately managed intra-operatively. This study highlights the tailoring of a post-implantation rehabilitation programme according to individual needs.

A mother's nutritional choices while pregnant may have a great influence on her baby's development in the womb and during infancy. There is evidence that what a mother eats during pregnancy interacts with her genes to affect her child's susceptibility to poor health outcomes including childhood obesity, pre-diabetes, allergy and asthma. Furthermore, after what an infant eats can change his or her intestinal bacteria, which can further influence the development of these poor outcomes. In the present paper, we review the importance of birth cohorts, the formation and early findings from a multi-ethnic birth cohort alliance in Canada and summarise our future research directions for this birth cohort alliance. We summarise a method for harmonising collection and analysis of self-reported dietary data across multiple cohorts and provide examples of how this birth cohort alliance has contributed to our understanding of gestational diabetes risk; ethnic and diet-influences differences in the healthy infant microbiome; and the interplay between diet, ethnicity and birth weight. Ongoing work in this birth cohort alliance will focus on the use of metabolomic profiling to measure dietary intake, discovery of unique diet–gene and diet–epigenome interactions, and qualitative interviews with families of children at risk of metabolic syndrome. Our findings to-date and future areas of research will advance the evidence base that informs dietary guidelines in pregnancy, infancy and childhood, and will be relevant to diverse and high-risk populations of Canada and other high-income countries.
Does the impact of a plant-based diet during pregnancy on birthweight differ by ethnicity?

Specific antibody responses were assessed in pigs immunized with the Taenia solium vaccine TSOL18. Anti-TSOL18 responses were compared 2 weeks after secondary immunization, where the interval between primary and secondary immunization was 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20 weeks. All animals responded to the vaccine and there was no diminution in antibody responses in animals receiving their second injection after an interval up to 20 weeks. Pigs receiving vaccinations at an interval of 12 weeks developed significantly increased antibody responses compared with animals receiving immunizations 4 weeks apart (P = 0·046). The ability to deliver TSOL18 vaccination effectively where the revaccination schedule can be delayed for up to 12–16 weeks in pigs increases the options available for designing T. solium control interventions that incorporate TSOL18 vaccination.

Epitaxial AlGaN/GaN layers grown by MBE on SiC substrates were irradiated with 150 MeV Ag ions at a fluence of 5×1012 ions/cm2. AlGaN/GaN MQWs were grown on Sapphire substrate by MOCVD and irradiated with 200 MeV Au8+ ions at a fluence of 5×1011 ions/cm2 . These samples were used to study the effects of SHI on optical properties of AlGaN/GaN based nano structures. RBS/Channelling strain measurements were carried out at off normal axis of irradiated and unirradiated samples. In as grown samples, AlGaN layer is partially relaxed with a small compressive strain. After irradiation this compressive strain increases by 0.22% in AlGaN layer. Incident ion energy dependence of dechannelling parameter shows E1/2 dependence, which corresponds to the dislocations. Defect densities were calculated from the E1/2 graph. As a result of irradiation defect density increased on both GaN and AlGaN layer. Optical properties of AlGaN/GaN MQWs before and after irradiation have been analyzed using PL. This study shows that SHI increase the confinement effects in the MQWs and intensity of the active layer of the MQWs luminescence is increased by one order. This may be due to the induced strain in GaN and AlGaN layers. Some unwanted yellow luminescence has also been introduced by the SHI possibly due the point defects or defect luminescence from the induced dislocations in GaN bulk epitaxial layers. In this study, we present some new results concerning high energy irradiation on AlGaN/GaN heterostructures and MQWs characterized by RBS/Channelling and PL.

High fluences of low energy Ge+ ions were implanted into Si matrix. We have also deposited Ge and SiO2 composite films by using the Atom beam sputtering (ABS). The as implanted/as-deposited films were irradiated by Swift Heavy Ions (SHI) with various energies and fluences. These pristine and irradiated samples were subsequently characterized by XRD and Raman to understand the crystallization behavior. Raman studies of the films indicate the formation of Ge crystallites as a result of SHI irradiation. Glancing angle X-ray diffraction results also confirm the presence of Ge crystallites in the irradiated samples. Moreover, the crystalline nature of Ge improves with an increase in fluence. Rutherford back scattering was used to quantify the concentration of Ge in SiO2 matrix and the film thickness. These detailed results have been discussed and compared with the ones available in literature. The basic mechanism for crystallization induced by SHI in these films will be presented.

Field experiments during the winter seasons of 1986–7 and 1987–8 studied the effect of three sub-surface drain spacings and three levels of phosphorus on the yield, chemical composition and uptake of nutrients by Indian mustard (Brassica juncea). The number of siliquae m-2 and seed yield decreased with increasing drain spacing. Application of phosphorus increased seed yield and yield attributes. The concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the seed and stalks decreased and those of sodium, calcium and magnesium increased with increasing drain spacing, but application of phosphorus increased the concentration of these nutrients in the seed and stalks. Absence of phosphorus in the drain water effluent and the level of available phosphorus in the soil profile after crop harvest indicated very slow movement of phosphorus, most of which was retained in the top 30 cm of soil.

Quantum mechanical simulations were performed to calculate the valence electron energy-loss spectra (VEELS) for hafnium oxide, hafnium silicate, silicon oxide and silicon systems using the full potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (LAPW) formalism within the Density Functional Theory (DFT) framework. The needed energy-loss function (ELF) was derived from the calculation of the complex dielectric tensor within the random phase approximation (RPA). The calculated spectra were compared with experimental scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM)/EELS of atomic layer deposited (ALD) HfO2 on Si(100) to evaluate their use as a “fingerprint” method that can be used to distinguish among various polymorphs of HfO2 thin films and relate the fine structure to the electronic structure and local bonding environment. Calculated low-loss spectra are found to be in satisfactory agreement with experimental data. Also, the combination of such theoretical calculations and experimental data could be of key importance in our understanding of fundamental issues of these systems. Compared to energy-loss near edge structure (ELNES) or core energy-loss spectra, the ELF calculated for low-loss spectra is computationally less expensive and can prove useful for prompt analysis.

The voltage-gated ‘glial’ sodium channel NaG belongs to a distinct molecular class within the multi-gene family of mammalian sodium channels. Originally found in central and peripheral glia, NaG has since been detected in neurons in rat dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and may play a role in Schwann cell-axon interactions. We have studied the presence of NaG-like immunoreactivity in the intact and injured human peripheral nervous system using a specific affinity-purified antibody. Nerve fibres in normal and injured peripheral nerves and normal skin exhibited intense NaG-immunoreactivity. Numerous NaG-immunoreactive nerve fibres surrounded neuronal cell bodies within postmortem control DRG, and in DRG avulsed from the spinal cord (i.e. after traumatic central axotomy). There were no significant differences in the pattern of NaG immunostaining between control and avulsed DRG, or with delay after injury. Generally, the neuronal cell bodies were only very weakly immunoreactive to NaG, indicating that the NaG immunoreactivity was predominantly in Schwann cells/myelin. In accord, we demonstrated NaG immunostaining in cultured human and rat Schwann cells, and in distal nerve after wallerian degeneration. NaG thus appears to be a useful new marker for Schwann cells in the human PNS, and a role in neuropathy deserves investigation.

High temperature compression tests have been performed on a Ti-44a/o Al-3a/o V-7.5v/o TiB2XD composite over the temperature range 1000 to 1300°C and the strain rate range 10-3 to 10s-1. The workability of this material for metalforming processes was determined using both dynamic material modeling and workability testing approaches to cover both internal and surface cracking. At higher temperatures and strain rates internal fracture occurred in the material, while at lower temperatures and higher strain rates surface cracks occurred. Use of lower temperatures and strain rates inhibited internal instabilities and surface cracking in the composite. A finite element model (FEM) was developed to describe the stress and strain states during the deformation process. Mechanical flow behavior obtained from the compression tests was used as input to the model. A fracture criterion developed from Kuhn's surface crack equation was coupled with the FEM model to predict bulk formability in a forging process.

High temperature compression workability tests have been performed on a Ti-44a/oA1-3a/oV- 7.5v/oTiB2 XD™ composite over a range of temperatures (1273 to 1473 K), strain rates (10−3 to 10 s−1), and interrupted strains. Three types of specimen configurations were used in the tests. Fracture caused by secondary tensile stress at the surface of the specimens was investigated in terms of crack initiation and propagation. The fractured specimens were analyzed using both optical and SEM microscopy. Cracks started at the equator of the specimens and propagated into the specimens through their longitudinal axis. The fracture mode varied with temperature and strain rate. At the lowest temperature (1273 K) and the lower strain rate (0.1 s−1), the fracture was transgranular with a crack arrester type. At the lowest and intermediate temperatures (1273 and 1373 K) and the highest strain rate (10 s−1), intergranular cracks were observed. At the highest temperature (1473 K) and the highest strain rate (10 s−1), transgranular failures with delamination and crack divider types were observed.
